A 59-year-old Hilo woman died on Tuesday, March 25th, from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle collision on Hawaii Belt Road (Route 11) .3 miles south of milemarker 99, near the Hookena area.  Kona patrol officers responded to a 7:01 a.m. call and determined that the victim, identified as Maydell Uilani Perreira, was driving a 2005 Kia 4-door sedan and traveling north on Highway 11 when she crossed the centerline and collided with a southbound 2006 Kenworth cement truck.  The 52-year-old cement truck driver of Kau was not injured.

The victim was not wearing a seat belt.  Police believe that speed was a contributing factor in the crash.  It was unknown on the Police Report date if drugs or alcohol were involved.  Traffic Enforcement Unit officers initiated a negligent homicide investigation and ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

This is the 10th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year, compared with nine traffic fatalities at this time last year.
