Puapuaanui Street – Pualani Estates
Today KTSC received a courtesy copy of a letter addressed to the Department of Public Works (DPW) regarding Puapuaanui Street concerns.
The street is a development approval condition for Pualani Mauka and Makai Projects requiring a channelized intersection and signalization at the Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway access point.
A resident on the northern end of Pualani Estates (Mauka) Phase I requests that DPW meet with and work with residents prior to opening the proposed Connector Road. Specific concerns include the following:
- There will be an enormous increase in traffic, based on the number of drivers who will prefer Queen Ka’ahumanu access at a signalized intersection (in preference to the “bare” access at Hualalai Road/Queen Ka’ahumanu Highway).
- The road has a steep slope and there is no apparent consideration for traffic calming measures prior to the road opening (this road is currently frequented by skate-boarders and motor cyclists as their racing arena).
- The connector road and Pualani Estates Phase III are in the Waiaha Floodway.
- Consideration is needed for access hazards by Pualani Estates residents onto the connector road; left-hand storage-entry lanes will be needed.
The concerns voiced here represent reasonable expectations that road development include due dilligence to avoid creating hazardous conditions.
Many thanks to Parijana Razavi for sharing these concerns and for making an effort to work with the DPW to forestall substandard road development.
